Is the economy 'that' big a deal for everyone? Personally, I find it interesting but I've heard some complaints from some friends that it bites because inflation tends to cause newer players to quit sooner.

yes, it has a big factor in mmorpgs, same as running a country, if the economy sucks, people will be unhappy, doing protest and violence, in the case of mmorpgs, when the economy goes sour, it could discourage players from playing, causing them to leave the game. less players, less popularity of the game

I suppose. If prices for items gets too ridiculous, it can be a turn-off. Meh. Economy. XD I can't escape it even in-game.

since people are having trouble with real money due to the crisis, they'll be thrifty on spending on item mall stuff. of course, this only affects F2P games with item malls. most of the time tho, the inflation just comes from poorly implemented drop rates.

it has a good side tho, especially if you're the one with the capability to farm/craft those expensive items XD

yes...as the law of supply and demand also applies to online gaming

and inflation only spikes up whenever there's a new update on the game, after a while it'll eventually go down
