Allods

Item Shop PR Mess

As much admiration as Allods Online has gained since its first beta test, it certainly is not enough to keep the vast majority of the player base from crying out in frustration over the lack of information on its item shop and the prices that were eventually set.

Today Massively brought the views of most of the Allods community front and center and Gala-Net, the publisher of Allods, has quickly responded to those views.

"We wanted to take an opportunity to apologize to the community for our lack of communication. We made a mistake by not letting you, our most passionate players know when the item shop was going to go live and we didn’t make the effort to learn more about how all of you feel regarding the contents of the item shop. Because of our lack of communication to you, many of you were wildly taken back by what you saw in the item shop today." - Stated, inarakatt, from Gala-Net.

This goes to show how important open communication is between the publisher and player base, even on an issue that would be more internal than transparent.  I guess if you want to launch an item shop for your mmo, you had better get some feedback during the process or you will be peppered with razor sharp criticism by your core users.

While I assume that the starting prices of the shop will remain unchanged, you can bet we will be seeing a discount sale in the near future to sooth the growing frustration of players.  Overall, I think this is a small issue in a great game that is certainly going to be the main contender in the free to play mmo genre.  Read the entire Apology here.

Gods and Heroes

Gods and Heroes Gets Second Chance

Heatwave Interactive™, a game development studio and online publisher, officially announced they are looking to save the Gods and Heroes IP with the acquisition of the intellectual property rights and all assets for Gods & Heroes: Rome Rising, the highly anticipated Roman mythology themed Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) game. As part of the transaction with PlayGrid™, Heatwave also obtained a source code license to the PlayGrid Platform, their online game publishing technology as well as acquiring two game development engines.

“Heatwave’s philosophy is to identify and develop world class IP, and we believe the project is just that,” said Anthony Castoro, co-founder and CEO, Heatwave Interactive. “With this acquisition Heatwave greatly expands its core development capabilities as well as adding a well-known, award-winning title to its expanding intellectual property portfolio. This game hits the Heatwave ‘HIP’ mark in terms of its social gaming features and the intrinsic entertainment value found in its mythological storyline, high action adventure and beautiful art style. ”

The newly acquired game engines, previously developed by Perpetual Entertainment for in-development titles Gods & Heroes: Rome Rising and Star Trek Online, will serve as the technology foundation for Heatwave’s planned roster of MMOs.

“The Perpetual team built high quality engines and a very robust and easy-to-use platform. Through this transaction with PlayGrid we secure all the necessary components needed to not only complete this game but also to operate our entire portfolio of online games on one platform,” said Donn Clendenon, co-founder and chief strategy officer, Heatwave Interactive. “This world-class online platform technology will allow us to reduce both development costs and time to market.”

Gods & Heroes: Rome Rising is a full scale action adventure MMO that immerses the audience in Roman mythology. Players step into a hero’s sandals to battle monsters and command minions while seeking favor from the gods. Heralded at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in 2006 as “Best in Show” by leading MMO sites Allakhazam and TenTonHammer, and dubbed “Game of Show” and “Best Graphics” by MMORPG, God & Heroes was in closed beta when production was halted in 2007.

“We at PlayGrid are thrilled to see Rome rise again with the Heatwave team,” said Chris McKibbin, co-founder, PlayGrid, and former president, Perpetual Entertainment. “Gods and Heroes was designed for both core and casual MMO players alike and Heatwave is one of the few studios with the talent and experience to fulfill this vision while delivering a final version that will fit with what today’s gamers are looking for. We are also thrilled that Heatwave has chosen to license the PlayGrid Platform to solve their game operating needs

With a strong roadmap of titles and a talented development team, Heatwave Interactive is focused on incubating its diverse and marketable roster of intellectual properties that have cross-media entertainment potential. The company has previously announced two IPs: Platinum Life: Web Edition and iSamJackson. A precursor to the in-development massively multiplayer online game, Platinum Life will launch March 2010 on social networks and the web, offering players the opportunity to become a music icon, taking them from the mean streets to the penthouse suites. Heatwave’s first launched title is the top-rated entertainment app, iSamJackson for Apple’s App Store, an innovative soundboard app that features a extensive collection of original and authentic recorded quotes, humorous adages and sage insight all provided by mega-celebrity Samu el L. Jackson.

Up until 31st March, during the jubilee weeks, shop points and cash prizes with a total value of more than 750,000 Euros will be berthed among the online treasure seekers.

It was on 22nd February 2007 that players first hoisted their sails and Bounty Bay Online started out on its maiden voyage. Three years and three comprehensive content updates later Frogster is celebrating the pirates’ jubilee in a quite special way: A series of community promotions will sweeten the tough life of the pirate over the celebratory period. Among other things, beckon doubled experience points and an increased drop rate for booty items. In addition all players will this week be receiving a voucher code for 50 shop points along with the newsletter.

The promo launch is marked today with an event in which all users buying shop points up until 25th February will receive double the value – therefore 100 percent extra points - of the points purchased.

The climax of the ‘Bounty Bay Online Holidays’ will be a seven-day in-game regatta in which players put their piratical knowledge to the test in an adventurous quest. All of the buccaneers who successfully complete the regatta will be entered into a lottery for 333 Euros as well as for various item packages.

As a crowning closing event to mark the end of the celebrations on 31st March, Frogster will be running a lottery for a full 1000 Euros among all of the players who have been active during the jubilee weeks.

There is a special micro site which gives more information about the ‘Bounty Bay Online Holidays’: http://www.bountybayonline.com/en/3years.html.

Fantasy Horse Racing eh?

TQ Digital, a Chinese-based online games publisher has introduced daily Horse Racing Tournament into its evergreen Kungfu-themed MMORPG, Conquer Online.  Hmmm, is it April 1st yet?

horseWell the official word is that Players of the free-to-play MMO, Conquer Online can now develop their characters by entering into daily horse racing tournaments to earn in-game bonuses.

The new system allows you to compete against other players and non-play characters (NPC's) for bragging rights, as well as the chance to claim precious in-game points and rare bonus content throughout each race.

Don't get me wrong, races are not new to fantasy mmorpgs, several major titles offer small mini-games like this, but we would have hoped it would be a little less traditional and a little more over the top.

Regardless, points will be awarded to the top 100 placed horses. These points can then be traded for refinery packs at the Arena Honor Store. Refinery items enhance a characters attributes and equipment.

There are ten daily horse races with the days program starting at 15.30. A new race will start every two hours, finishing at 23:30. To enter a race players need to navigate to or use the Teleporter and head for the Horse Race Manager via the in-game map. Players need to register 10 minutes prior to each new race, and make sure they are in possession of a steed and have achieved mount skills.

Players can customize their steed via the in-game shopping mall with its revamped, slick category interface. And for a limited time only, players should take advantage of a special promotion on Steeds - http://co.91.com/content/2010-01-17/20100117230413164.shtml.
