Will Warlocks of WOW get the improvements they need?
For World of Warcraft Players that maintain the dps Warlock class, there may be hope on the horizon with some new ideas that have been discussed by Blizzard. But, the key word here is "ideas" because most of the information is pretty vague and no specific timetable on their implementation to the servers.
Remember when Warlocks were the premier crowd control class and PvP actually resulted in winning a lot of fights? It has been a long time since the reign of Warlock dominance and while there are some basic tweaks that could be put in place to calm the growing rage of Warlock players, the fact is that Blizzard might be over-thinking the once grand WoW class. This future update will hopefully improve the relationship of Warlocks vs Mages in pvp and overall dps. Until the changes are made, new players that are thinking downloading WoW may want to pick a bit more competitive class. Everyone knows that stuns are driving the Warlocks mad and chain stun makes us nearly useless, so we are happy that Blizzard has made this a priority but we don't really need to wait for a major patch to have this fixed. Remember when a crafty Warlock could go head to head with a rogue...yea that was a long time ago...but it needs to be fixed now, not by the end of the year.
Other changes that we should be seeing include a revamp of the pet system; after all, if Warlocks are supposed to be a pet master class, then they should probably have pets that actually survive a fight. How about scalability? Well that will be bittersweet because of the dynamics of the system. If the lock gains crit and haste, the demons aren't going to benefit as much as if the lock had gained spellpower. As far as pet summoning, fortunately there will be a dramatic reduction the cooldown on Fel Domination which will help out those with the master summoner and Fel Domination talents.
As for addressing the fact that the majority of DPS classes in WoW can spend at the most, three talent points to decrease threat by 30%, and Warlocks have to melt four talent points in two different trees just to gain a 10% drop in threat the answer is not all that clear. Blizzard knows that messing too much with the talent tree can cause over powering because of stacking, etc. so they will start by possibly moving up some talents while of course dropping down others in their place. Also lowering the cooldown of Soulshatter to three minutes will have minor effect on thread dumping without creating a full rotational issue. And WoW players might be interested in knowing that Hellfire will probably be cut from the kill tree all together.
There are all kinds of other ideas being thrown around to improve the class which include Flying Mounts, complete revamp of the soul shard system, improvements to demonology specifically, Demonic Circle improvements, and changes to the Glyph System. It's nice to hear that there are a lot of things on the drawing board but this of course begs the question, when will Warlocks get improvements? Well 3.2 or higher, maybe a major expansion? Will it happen this summer or will we have to wait until fall, well lets hope at least preventing Warlock Chain Stun will happen on the next patch.
