Jay-Z Steps Into Virtual World By Bringing Rocowear Clothing In-Game
The gaming world just a bit more interesting today with the announcement that Jay-Z has stepped in to the virtual item business. Leave it to the business-savy music mogul to start a new trend that will surely have a huge financial impact on in-game items and the highlight the power of social gaming to influence real world economics. Rocawear, the famous lifestyle apparel brand co-created by the legendary Jay-Z, will now be available to social networks and online games including Outspark’s Project Powder. The snoboarding themed MMORPG is a great place to start as fashion in the real world snoboarding industry is huge and will not be as big of a stretch as say, a fantasy themed MMO.
“Our online games and relevant user base provide great engagement channels for the right celebrities & brands. We’re excited about working with Rocawear, one the leading and hippest brands out there. Partnerships like these deliver the types of experiences and unique content we continuously seek to offer our community,” said Wilson Kriegel, Outspark Vice President of Business Development.
The Rocawear virtual items are already on the virtual shelves from the Project Powder Pro Shop, accessible at http://store.outspark.com/projectpowder and within the Project Powder game. This seams like a natural fit but we will see how well gamers take to the new threads.
The partnership was put together by Virtual Greats, which connects celebrities, artists, intellectual property owners and brands with a new generation of fans, unlocking value through digital representations of real-world content in online communities. Similar deals have been made for console games but this deal marks the first time merchandise from Virtual Greats will be available in massively multiplayer online games. Rocawear will also be the first apparel brand to license its intellectual property for distribution in online communities via Virtual Greats, building on Virtual Great’s existing strength in celebrity, entertainment, and sports IP.

Imagine in a few years when the virtual scene determines what clothing we all wear in real life. How long will it be until celebrity designers are making clothing out of rune cloth?
